Billys Camps No. 37 and 38, Lake Ballard and Newman

Hi there,
A small change of plans again... I left Leonora and travelled by dirt via copperfield to Lake Ballard to view the sculpture exhibition of "Inside Australia" by Antony Gormely. I stayed the night in perfect silence. I continued the next morning to Sandstone and stayed nearby at an old homestead, Lake Mason. No one but Bill.
I had decided to then get back on the blacktop, but continued by dirt road to Meekatharra. The place had always stood out on the map, and was a must go to place. Funny. I then zoomed up the highway and stopped at the road house " Kumarina" overnight. Then on to Newman the next day.
The cattle road kill on the Great Northern Highway was heavy, more than I had seen anywhere before. The sad downside to this is the associated road kill of Wedge Tail eagles. Many dead at the side of the road and often in pairs. They are very slow to get airborn when spooked, and for a clever animal tend to leave it late to leave their carrion. I had no trouble avoiding the cattle or Eagles... do the truckies try ? I passed an escorted wide load of 7.5m and with warning the oncoming truckies must pull over and stop and all did so without complaint. ??
I did a tour of the BHP Billiton mine today and I think the tour guide said their name 50 times.... I now love BHP Billiton..... and I wont mention the gold coin donation I was asked to pay for the standard hand out map of the Newman area at the Tourist info Centre.
Someone said the travelling older generation dont contribute to the local centres they travel through..... you wanna see my bankcard balance ??? Hop of the soap box Bill.

I looked at the map of WA today and I have achieved my goal of travelling the inner part. I will go via Marble Bar tomorrow, stay the night there, and continue on to Cape Keraudren on Tuesday.
Salt water :)

Billy's Camp No. 35 and 36, Niagara Dam and Leonora

3/06/2014

I left Kalgoorlie with the intention of going to Kookynie and stopped at Niagara Dam for a quick look and stayed 4 nights.
I stayed 2 nights at Leonora.
The town of Niagara lasted 20 years, until the gold ran out, as is the case with all these towns.
Abandoned Menzies road house

Looking towards the dam wall, it was built to provide water for the steam trains
